Roles of Emily (Emily of Emrald Hill)


Hi readers, thanks for watching this post and wasting five minutes of your life.

Just joking! Today I will be talking about the differents roles of Emily in the play Emily of Emerald Hill as mentioned in the previous post. Emily can be seen taking on many roles in the play, matriarch, wife, boss, etc. I will be talking and elaborating about each of them.

For starters, one of the main roles of Emily is a wife. She was seen being a caring wife and controlling wife in the play. She cooks sometimes and care about his husband, Kheong. She make decisions for Kheong like when she persuaded Kheong to join the Legislative Council and be a councilor.

Emily was also the matriarch of the family. She domineered the house and controlled every activity of the house. She make decisions for every member of the house. She was also a boss for the maids, gardeners and chauffeurs in the house. She was quite a strict boss and have high standards for the employees. This can be shown when she fired Ah Sim because she made a few mistakes.

Emily was also a friend to Bee Choo. She was seen as a caring and understanding friend. One example of that is that she kick Mr Fang out of her spare house so that Bee Choo could live in . She is also understanding in the sense that she knew Bee Choo will not accept charity and put up a "nominal fee". Furthermore, Emily was also a mother in the play. However, she uses her domineering attitude and make every decision for her kids. They eventually grew tired of her controlling and tried to get away from her and make their own decision. This eventually lead to Richard's death and Doris's moving away.

Other irrelevant roles such as mother-in-law and daughter-in-law was also played by Emily. From this we can show that Emily was not a easy person to play as she needs to take care of so much with only two hands. However, Emily did not use her power properly and eventually learn her lesson the hard way. THANK YOU.

Emily of Emerald Hill


Hello all readers, I am now proud to present to you the next post by yours truly. In this post I will be writing about my secondary-two literature book called "Emily of Emerald Hill" and I will be giving a basic background of it and also the story overview.

Firstly, the author of this play is a Singaporean woman called Stella Kon. Who is she? She is a Singaporean writer, she was born in Edinburgh in 1944.She was educated in Singapore and she descended from two old Singapore families.She has 2 brothers and 1 sister and was married in 1966 and later divorced.She lived for many years in Malaysia,has two sons and has been writing for thirty years.

Enough about that, lets move on to the story. The story is mainly about events that change the life of a woman named Emily. A rough outline of Emily is that she is a Nonya matriarch who dominates her family, yet in the end finds that she loses what she loves most. The whole story is a one-woman play and there are no other actors involved.

Emily was born in the 20th century and she grew up with the mindset of how traditional woman should act. She was abandoned by her parents at an early age and influence her to think that woman in the world have no social status, which lead to her domineering behavior in the future. In the future she is married to a rich family and she eventually became the matriarch. She plans everything for her family and causes them to only depend on her for everything. Later in the story, one of her son, Richard, grew tired of her and made decisions on his own and work in a horse-riding school instead of studying. Emily used emotional blackmail to persuade Richard to quit which results in his suicide.

Kheong, Emily's husband, was also being controlled by her and eventually found another mistress and refused to come back to Emily's side. Emily once again tries to persuade him to come back which leads to Kheong refusing to see her before he died of illness. At the end, all of her children left her and some parts of the house were sold and thus leaving Emily alone in the house.

Youth Olympic Game Torch run-past


Hello again readers, today I will be talking about the Youth Olympic Game (YOG) torch that ran though my school in it's journey!!
To refresh your memory, I am currently studying in the prestigious secondary school Hwa Chong Institution located in Bukit Timah Road, Singapore. Enough details, let's focus on the main topic.
This incident happened on 11th of August 2010, students from every level was supposed to cheer for the runners. School has delayed for 1 hour and everyone was required to wear their PE shirts. The secondary two's were stationed near the gate, lucky them...
...Unfortunately, I was assigned to perform public duty on that day. Since I am a member of the St. John CCA, I volunteered to help and stationed with a team somewhere and help if there is an injury. We were stationed near another gate, and waited patiently for the torch to arrive...
however, luck was not on my side as the runner did not even ran past my team, everyone was cheering them and following them while we just stood there. The leader was shocked and quickly repositioned elsewhere.In the end we managed to get a close glimpse of the runners, holding the YOG torch which is smaller sized compared to my imagination.
I hope that everyone appreciated the irony and humor of that story. I will be posting more stuff next time so remember to tune in to see!! BYE!!

National Day Parade Celebration!!


Hi readers, I know all of you which have waited patiently for the next post, well wait no more! In this post I will be sharing with you my first-hand experience on marching in the annual Singapore National Parade!!

If you don’t know what’s going on, Singapore’s National Day is held on 9th August every year. This year’s parade was held in a place called the “Padang”, which is situated at the old Supreme Court. In case you don’t know, I participated in the marching contingent which was an event at the parade. I was marching in the St. John Ambulance Brigade contingent along with other uniform groups. We symbolize the psychological defence which is one of the “defences” in Singapore.

On that bright and sunny day, we arrived at the Singapore PITS building early in the morning. Security was very tight there was it was an important day in the history of Singapore. We had an early lunch at around 11 o’clock and rested for a while before going for the final rehearsal. The rehearsal lasted for 2 hours and I was severely sunburned (HOT). Again we had early “dinner” at 3 o’clock in the afternoon which consists of KFC and drinks!! We rested and rested for enough energy for the show…

The seats at the Padang were filled with enthusiastic people and we were getting ready for our time to shine. Our march-in was right after people parachuting out of a helicopter. We marched to the center of the Padang and stood there motionless. We were not allowed to move and stood there watching the rest of the parade from a birds-eye view. Important people such as MM, PM came and finally the President of Singapore arrived. We opened up our umbrella to salute him and from the TOP view it will spell the word SINGAPORE!! Impressive!!

The whole parade ended somewhere at 9, and my feet was sore at the end, but it was totally WORTH it. That once-in-a-lifetime experience cannot be brought even with all the money in the world! So I urge all of you to grab hold of opportunities that come to you. BYE!

E-learning Assignment (TASK 1)

Dear all, today I will be sharing with you a brief introduction on the poem "We Slept with our boots on".
Although there is not much information provided about the speaker, it is very clear that he is a soldier and he is fighting like all other men, not one of those behind lines simply giving orders. He does not know where he is fighting or who he is fighting but fights solely for his survival. I feel that the poet's description of the speaker is one that is unprejudiced. He does not make the speaker seem like a patriotic character, and neither does he make the speaker seem like one who is uninvolved in the action. The speaker is made to fight aimlessly, and he is so numbed to war that there is no longer any emotional response to the killing.
There is a slight change in tone when the speaker describes the mountains in the area, making it seem a little calmer, however it only makes the fighting worse, as it now takes place in even the calmest of areas.
There is some religeon involved in this poem, and the speaker makes references to heaven and God. The area he was fighting in was compared to God, where the fighting was compared to hell.
He knows he will die sooner or later and has prepared what he wants to say when he reaches heaven. He remembers all his friends lost and killed in the action.
The form of this poem is that the first line the poet writes always rhymes with the second line. This gives the poem a very monotonous feel, like a chant, and this is in line with the nature of the poem, where the speaker is almost like a zombie.
This poem is very vivid in terms of sound. There is the sound of constant artillary, weaponry, the sounds of metal hitting the ground and the splattering of mud. All these add to the realism of the poem and how it absorbs the reader as though the reader is in the battle itself.
The tone in this poem is very straightforward. The speaker deliveres the poem in the same way as his attitude is to the fighting, unfeeling and indifferent.

Last week (significant post)

Dear readers, I hope that you have enjoyed your last week, because I had a mixture of both happy and unhappy events on that week. At the beginning of the week it was tough but at the end of it was very 'slackish' and relaxing.

During Monday and Tuesday, the alarm clock was not ringing at it's usual time, 6:40 (I could walk to school) but instead it rang at 7:30, not because I did not set it, but because it was IT home-learning days! If you have seen my previous blogs, you can see that it was more busy than normal school days but gave us a chance to be more independent. (It is still very busy)

For the next few days, it was as panic-stricken as the end of the world. Because of many 'holidays', we have missed many test papers and the results was flooding in. I had some which are good, while some are bad. So far so good as I fave not have any failures yet, (please stay that way) and learnt a many good lessons and tips to do well next time.

All bad things must come to an end, and god things will follow. Friday may be considered a bad bay for some of you, but it was a fantastic day for me. For starters, we did not have lessons on that day, we had EOTA (End of term Activities) for our whole consortium classes (My school was divided into four consortium, I will explain later). Secondary one had Amazing race, secondary three had archery while secondary four had PAINTBALL (OMG), secondary two was not too bad, we had bowling, which is also the first time I bowl, so it was quite an experience.

We were split into groups of four and started to bowl. My score was not too bad, considering it was my first time and it was fun. Even though many of us had Co-Curriculum activities later, thanks to our seniors achieving fantastic results in the 'A' level examination, we got a 'half day', which means if we got permission from our teachers, we don not have to go to our CCA. Our teacher gave us permission, so we can rest at home and I do not have to face push-ups and physical training from my CCA.

That is basically all the interesting events that happen last week, I wanted to share with all of you my fantastic week. Hope you enjoyed it!

Old books,new experience (significant post)

Dear readers, I am sure that everyone will know that I am currently a secondary two student and studying in the prestigious Hwa Chong Institution after I have type finish this message. Last year's Language Art lesson, we are compulsory to read and understand three books, they are: 'Village by the Sea' by Anita Desai (the picture on the left), 'Nothing but the Truth' by Avi (the picture on the
right) and 'Little Ironies' by Catherine Lim (the picture on the bottom left).
These books are essential for worksheets, assignments, and exams. We change books when we change terms, for example term 1 we used 'Little Ironies' and so on. These books were very interesting as it teaches us what is happening in the real world and the behaviors and environments of certain people and places.We are required to bring these books every Language Arts lesson.
These books may have seemed random in the beginning but at the end of the year I have realised that these books have helped us in our basic common sense and knowledge of the world. For more information, I suggest you read them yourself, it can also be used to kill time like I did. You can also borrow from me if you can!
They are not very pricey so I suggest you get yourself one, hope you enjoy reading them!

LA home-learning homework(Part 2)

Hi again everyone, sorry for the delay but I have worked hard for this second part of the ‘LA home-learning homework’. Whoo! Hoo!
If you have seen my first part, you can see that I am a naturalist and very intrapersonal. For this post, I shall answer a question based on my character.
The question is: ‘Who would you want to be friends with in the novel? Explain.’
Based on my own thoughts, I would most probably want to be friends with Atticus Finch, the father of Scout Finch and Jem Finch.
Atticus Finch was a respected and hard-working lawmaker and was then reelected without opposition many times. His wife died of a heart attack two years after Scout was born. Atticus is brutally honest, highly moral, a tireless ‘crusader’ for good causes, a virtual pacifist and, for the most part, devoid of any racial or class prejudices afflicting the other citizens of Maycomb. He goes to great pains to instruct his children on the importance of being open-minded, judicious, generous neighbors and citizens. He is eventually revealed to be an expert marksman, but he had chosen to keep this fact hidden from his children so that they would not in any way think of him as a man of violence. He was once the best shot in Maycomb County, but quit shooting because he felt he had an unfair advantage. Physically, he is described throughout the novel as a tall, middle-aged man with glasses to correct his failing eyesight, and hair slightly graying at the temples.
I would like to be friends with Atticus as I could be under his influence and become a better man. I could learn from his bravery, honesty, constantly help the poor as much as possible and of course, not to become a racist and treat everyone with respect. This can be shown when Atticus help defend the innocent Tom Robinson from going to jail and prove his innocence.

LA home-learning homework(Part 1)

I am now writing from my beloved home, the Hwa Chong Institution Boarding School. The reason for me writing now and not going to school is because it is IT home-learning! For LA lesson, we have to pick 2 task according to my learning profile (which I will show you later) and pick one question to answer for each task. This LA homework is about the contents of the famous novel, ‘To kill a mockingbird’.
According to my obvious profile, my two tasks are Naturalist and Intrapersonal.
In this blog post, I shall be sharing about my task as a naturalist.
The question is ‘Do a research on the natural habitat of mockingbird. In your research, include the kind of flora and fauna you think exist in Maycomb and explain why the mockingbirds live in Maycomb.’
According to my research, the ‘mockingbird’ in the novel ‘To kill a mockingbird’ refers to a Northern mockingbird which has came to Maycomb, Alabama which is located in SOUTHERN America because of harsh weather at that time and migrate to southern places.
According to the novel, Miss Maudie explains to Scout the importance of not shooting a mockingbird. She said that the mockingbird does not disturb us and sing their hearts out for us to hear. This fact is also true in real life and they only attack us when we disturb them.
Year-round the Northern Mockingbird is found in areas with open ground and with shrubby vegetation like hedges, fruiting bushes, and thickets. When foraging on the ground, it prefers grassy areas, rather than bare spots. Common places to find Northern Mockingbirds include parkland, cultivated land, suburban areas and in second growth habitat at low elevations.
According to my research, I think that the trees and fauna which grow in Maycomb are the maple trees and oak trees. I think that the citizens of Maycomb grow maple trees. I also think that they grow oak trees as there is a forest behind Maycomb. I also think that grow rice plants as Maycomb is rather isolated and there are fertile land which they can grow wheat to harvest crops like the Cunninghams in the novel.
As there are insufficient space (for my opinion) and I dislike long essays, I will post my other task on another post, so be sure to look out for it!
